Washington D.C. - WMATA

Crime and insecurity
The objective of establishing a metro system in Washington D.C. which limits the opportunity for crime as much as possible has certainly been attained. The result has been the construction of a metro that combines state-of-the-art crime prevention planning and design requirements with good organisational measures regarding maintenance, cleaning, and policing. The metro system has low crime rates regardless of its location: a city which is still one of America's most crime-ridden places. In 1994, there were 1,179 serious crimes reported in the Metro; 332 of these incidents concerned petty theft and 36 were aggravated assault.
